Post milestone

The post milestone at the end of the Vogtland railway line was erected by the stone-cutter and sculptor Wolfgang Jakob in 2002 following a generous donation from Gisela Meierkord.

Its design was inspired by that of the historical column at the former Obertor city gate (on the old trade route to Schneeberg), which dates from 1725. The 4.85-metre-tall milestone is made of seven interlocking parts. Its coat of arms is made from Carrara marble, whilst the rest of the structure is made from Cotta sandstone mined in the Elbe valley.

Saxony's post milestones were erected at all important post and trade routes during the reigns of Augustus the Strong and his successor in a bid to provide travellers with officially sanctioned distances and journey times.
