Innovative ability and technology transfer between science and industry characterise the business location Zwickau. Clearly visible is the close interlocking of research and application at the most diverse educational and research institutions.
One of them is the Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau - University of Applied Sciences (WHZ), whose beginnings go back to the 15th century. In close cooperation with large corporations, but also regional companies, WHZ scientists research and develop practical solutions, especially in the areas of mobility and motor vehicles, energy efficiency and health.
Almost 10 million euros for research could be raised in 2016. One third comes from orders from the business sector. At present, 260 scientific employees are working on around 150 projects. Each of the 150 professors raised an average of approximately 62,000 euros in third-party funding.
The Fraunhofer Application Centre for Optical Metrology and Surface Technologies, the only one of its kind in eastern Germany, forms a bridge between the requirements of the regional economy and the latest research approaches in optical metrology, image processing and biophotonics.
